"I first fell in love with tailored trousers after trying on a pleated relaxed-leg pair from Vince at the store in L.A. My black pair is my most worn and complimented pair, and I have been a fan ever since!" —M.F. "My new go-to brand for elevated and—most importantly—comfortable wardrobe essentials is Anine Bing, especially when I'm in need of a breezy pair of pants. What's even better: Some trousers have matching tops that take the guesswork out of getting dressed." —Alexis Bennett, commerce writer
I'm a big fan of Ottolinger's art prints. They're always eye-catching and conversation-starting and look really great on their mesh pieces. Designers Codina Gadient and Christa Gadient first partnered with the artist Julien Nguyen for their fall 2020 collection and recently issued new iterations of that smash-hit collaboration. I missed them last time around, so was very pleased to be able to snag a skirt this time. I've owned Solid & Striped's The Veronica swimsuit in black for years and it's my epitome of the perfect suit—not only does it offer the perfect balance of demure (it's a one-piece) and provocative (the plunge gives it a bit of va-va-voom), but it has a waist (everything should have a waist!) and the bottoms offer proper coverage (swim brands, can you please stop cutting the backs of suits as narrow as the front. please.). So this summer, when looking for a suit I loved equally as much as my Veronica, I just thought, why not get it in other colors. It was the only suit I ever really wanted to wear anyway, so now I can sport it in black, white, and red. Guess it's only a matter of time before I own the navy color, too.
Finally pulled the trigger on the slides of the summer, The Givenchy Marshmallow platform slides! Still waiting for these to come in the mail, but can't wait to pair them with a mini dress and layer on the accessories! To date, Laura and Deanna Fanning remain the only designers to ever send me a piece of literature in lieu of show notes. Last winter, the book Flâneuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, and London by Lauren Elkin arrived in a delicate box alongside fabric swatches, and the sisters explained to me the way wandering about London and reading Elkin's book helped them imagine the ways women's garments change their posture and practice in life. This bag they designed for their fall 2021 collection epitomizes that idea to me; Deanna demo'ed its use over a Zoom call showing how it's perfectly engineered to hug into your upper arm and fall down to your wrist gently and elegantly so you can pop out a cigarette or your cell phone. It has a clean Space Age shape and is so radically beautiful and useful. What more could you want from a bag.
